Severe Cold Impacts Many Regions of the U.S.

[In] Some of these temperatures, it only takes 5 minutes … outdoors to get frostbite …

Michelle Grossman, NBC News meteorologist, during her report on winter alerts for millions of Americans this week.

The Big Picture: Millions of Americans are under winter alerts as “dangerous” and “life-threatening” cold makes its way across much of the United States. According to The Weather Channel, “Parts of the Northeast will end their 700+ day snowless streak. … Snow, ice and freezing rain are coming down across the Southeast, especially in the Tennessee valley. … Freezing drizzle has been seen across parts of Central Texas and northern Louisiana. Snow is also arriving in the mid-Atlantic, including Washington, DC and Baltimore …”

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories across many regions. Hard freeze warnings have been issued in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas, and wind chill advisories and warnings are in place for a large region of the central states.

The current Arctic blast is anticipated to last through at least Tuesday, “before another Arctic blast arrives late this week” (NOAA/NWS).

Also To Note: This comes after a summer of dangerously high heat in the U.S. with temperatures 10 to 30 degrees above normal across the eastern two-thirds of the nation.
