• The short-term solution will keep the government funded until mid-February.
• The U.S. gov't faced a shutdown unless lawmakers passed a bill to allocate money for federal agencies. President Biden needs to sign this bill into law by Friday at midnight in order for it to go into effect.

Why It Matters: While this compromise funds the government through the New Year, it provides only a band-aid to a larger debate about government spending. Congress still needs to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (borrowing limit) and consider a massive social spending plan advocated by the White House.
