The updated Southwest Airlines website, announcing upcoming changes to the seating policies.
What To Know: Southwest Airlines – the third-largest airline in the U.S. – has been known for its open-seating policy for over 50 years. Earlier this year, Southwest Airlines announced it would begin doing assigned seating for flights beginning in 2026. Recently, the airline updated its website indicating what this will mean for A-List and A-List Preferred members and Companion Pass holders.
What Southwest Airlines says about assigned seating changes for members:
- A-List members will be able to select standard upfront seats for free (even if flying on lowest-level fares) when booking and will be able to choose an extra legroom seat within 48 hours of departure at no extra cost, if available.
- A-List Preferred members will be able to select from all available seats, including extra legroom if available, at no cost.
- Companion Pass holders will be able to select an available seat for the designated Companion, and any applicable member seating benefits will extend to both travelers.
A Southwest spokesperson stated that more details will be coming in the spring of 2025, according to The Points Guy.
