Our approach has allowed us to build a comprehensive atlas mapping the associations of GLP-1RA spanning all organ systems. The study’s results provide insights into some known and previously unrecognized benefits and risks of GLP-1RA.
Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, a clinical epidemiologist and nephrologist who was the senior author of the latest study on weight-loss drugs like Ozempic.
Why It Matters: A recent study published in Nature Medicine identified new risks and widespread benefits associated with using GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA), also known as weight-loss/diabetes drugs like Ozempic. “People who took GLP-1 medications had lower risks of 42 different health outcomes and higher risks for 19.” (CNN) With GLP-1RA, researchers found extensive benefits to cognitive function and behavioral and mental health disorders. The study also identified increased risks for pancreatitis, arthritis, kidney conditions and gastrointestinal issues.
Study Background: The study was conducted by three doctors using the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs database with data spanning 3.5 years. The study examined over 200,000 patients with Type 2 diabetes using GLP-1RA medications (Ozempic) and compared them to 1.7 million people using more traditional medications.
Noteworthy: While on GLP-1RA, findings showed a decreased risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Recently, a separate study was released that indicated dementia in the U.S. is projected to double by 2060. “These drugs also reduce inflammation in the brain and result in weight loss; both these factors may improve brain health and explain the reduced risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia,” said Dr. Al-Aly.
