Stumpy is such a unique and well-loved tree because it’s small and deals with Tidal Basin flooding daily. Yet it’s full of beautiful cherry blossoms. Everyone cheers for the little guy!
Dave Lyons, a D.C.-area photographer, talking about the small and hollow cherry tree that garnered widespread attention in Washington, D.C. this year.
Stumpy, a hollow cherry tree susceptible to flooding, has received widespread attention this year as the cherry trees bloom in Washington, D.C.'s Tidal Basin. Despite all odds, the small tree manages to survive – and even bloom – year after year.
First named Stumpy by a Reddit user in 2020, the tree was one of the top attractions this year as more than 1.5 million people flocked to D.C. to catch the trees in peak bloom. While it is unknown how many more years Stumpy will continue to bloom, we can't help but feel inspired by its resiliency and beauty!
