What Did Americans Watch In 2023?

February 2, 2024

For all intents and purposes, ‘Suits’ was an original on Netflix because that viewing cohort, you know, certainly didn’t watch it on USA.

Brian Fuhrer, senior vice president of product strategy and thought leadership at Nielsen, a media research company responsible for new data outlining the top shows and movies streamed in 2023 on TVs in the United States. “Suits,” a USA Network show about lawyers, came out on top.

Why It Matters: “Suits” – which originally aired between 2011-2019 – broke the record for having the highest number of minutes spent watching a show in a single year (57.7 billion minutes), beating the previous record held by “The Office” – which originally aired between 2005-2013 – (57.1 billion minutes in 2020). It’s worth noting, however, that shows with more episodes and/or longer episodes tend to perform stronger when it comes to minutes spent watching; “Suits” has around 83 hours worth of episodes, while “The Office” has around 73 hours worth of episodes. Both broke records while streaming on Netflix, the top streamer in the world.
