No room left for Mexico or for Canada. No, the tariffs, you know, they’re all set. They go into effect tomorrow.

President Donald Trump answering a question from reporters at the White House on Monday. Tariffs on imported goods from Canada, Mexico and China officially went into effect Tuesday.

Why It Matters: The tariffs aim to curb fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration but are also stirring fears of a global trade war. They include a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with 10% on Chinese goods, in addition to the 10% already in effect against China.

Developing Impacts:

  • In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced 25% tariffs on U.S. goods. He says that there is “no justification” for the tariffs, saying, “Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship. They will violate the very trade agreement that was negotiated by President Trump in his last term.” (AP)
  • Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said that Mexico will counter the U.S. tariffs with its own tariffs on American goods, to be announced on Sunday in Mexico City, adding that the tariffs Mexico will retaliate with are “not in any way or with the purpose of starting an economic or commercial confrontation that unfortunately and regrettably is the opposite of what we must be doing.” (CBS News)
  • China announced tariffs of up to 15% on certain U.S. agricultural goods. China also placed 10 more U.S. firms on its unreliable entity list (a list of companies that face sanctions) and filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization in addition to the one filed in response to the Feb. 4 tariffs. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said, “For the long term, it is possible that China and the U.S. will continue to negotiate, but the current atmosphere is not good.” (AP)
  • Markets are reacting negatively, as the Dow dropped 1.8%, the S&P 500 fell 1.8% and the Nasdaq lost 1.6%.
  • The Trump administration remains confident that tariffs will attract investment in American production, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick pointing to how chipmaker TSMC increased its U.S. investment.
