My family went from cotton to Congress…and that’s why I’m announcing today that I’m running for president of the United States.”
Tim Scott announcing his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Why It Matters: Scott has represented South Carolina by serving in the Senate since 2013.
He is the sole Black Republican senator in the U.S. Senate (the Senate has a total of 3 Black Senators – including Sen. Corey Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA).
Focusing on his personal background, his family and his rise from poverty, Scott says, "We live in the land of opportunity. We live in the land where it is absolutely possible for a kid raised in poverty in a single parent household, in a small apartment, to one day serve in the people's house and maybe even the White House today."
Scott is the second Republican from South Carolina to enter the Presidential nomination campaign for the Republican party. He will be running against Former President Donald Trump, and former South Carolina governor, Nikki Haley.
