This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg on the discovery of a tractor-trailer containing more than 40 people dead and at least 16 injured — one of the deadliest human smuggling incidents “in recent memory.”

Why It Matters: "San Antonio Police Chief William McManus described the case as the deadliest human smuggling incident he could recall in the city" (The Texas Tribune).

What Happened: Early reports point to this as a human smuggling operation — transporting adults and children illegally over the U.S. southern border. Authorities say three people are in custody. The details of what law enforcement discovered upon discovering the vehicle are important, but we'd like to share a gentle warning that they are difficult to read.

Big Picture: U.S. southern border encounters have continued to hit record-highs in recent months.
