The Soldiers we have lost in this tragedy were not just Soldiers – they were a part of our family. Our hearts are heavy with a sorrow that echoes across the whole Marne Division … But the search isn’t finished until everyone is home.
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, announcing Monday that three U.S. soldiers of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division were confirmed deceased in Lithuania after their armored vehicle was recovered.
Why It Matters: According to the U.S. Army press release, “Search and recovery operations continue for the remaining fourth Soldier.” This news comes after the soldiers and their large armored vehicle (M88) went missing last week about six miles from the Belarus border. The M88 was discovered in a swampy, densely forested area, where a complex search and recovery mission ensued by the U.S. Army, Lithuanian Armed Forces, Lithuanian contractors and officials and Polish Armed Forces.
The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence also offered condolences, saying, “We mourn the tragic loss of U.S. soldiers in Lithuania. Our deepest condolences go out to their families and comrades during this difficult time. We honour their service and sacrifice.”
