U.S. House Rejects Motion To Remove House Speaker

May 9, 2024

As I’ve said from the beginning, and I’ve made clear here every day, I intend to do my job. And I’ll let the chips fall where they may. In my view, that is leadership.

United States Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Wednesday after representatives voted to table a vote on a motion to remove him from leadership.

Why It Matters: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) sought to remove the House Speaker from his position, with the move coming weeks after Rep. Johnson helped push through a spending package that included aid to U.S. allies, including Ukraine and Israel. Despite the effort to oust him, the House voted 359-43 to table Rep. Green’s “motion to vacate” vote, keeping Rep. Johnson in place as House Speaker.

Rep. Greene stated in her resolution, “Given a choice between advancing Republican priorities or allying with Democrats to preserve his own personal power, Johnson regularly chooses to ally himself with Democrats.”

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), the House Democratic leader, said after the vote: “Our decision to stop Marjorie Taylor Greene from plunging the country into further chaos is rooted in our commitment to solve problems.”
