The death of Khalid ‘Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri will temporarily disrupt the organization’s ability to plot external attacks.

United States Central Command forces in a statement announcing a “unilateral strike” that killed a senior ISIS leader.

Why It Matters: The U.S. military killed Khalid 'Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri, a senior ISIS leader, in Syria on Monday. He helped develop the leadership structure for ISIS; his recent role within the Islamic State group was to plan attacks in Europe. While his death will delay possible attacks outside of Syria and Iraq, the group remains active within the Middle East, the U.S. Central Command noted.

Important Context: The death of Khalid 'Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri marks the latest in a series of attacks carried out by U.S. forces as they target al Qaeda-linked militants as well as senior ISIS members in northwest Syria. In February, two members of an offshoot group of al Qaeda were killed by a drone.
