We’re just looking forward to getting some closure after a long waiting period.

Evan Bates, one of the American athletes set to be given a gold medal, after the decision to reallocate Olympic medals for the 2022 games.

The Big Picture: The members of the U.S. Olympic figure skating team will receive gold medals for the 2022 Olympic team figure skating competition after the disqualification of Russian skater Kamila Valieva. It took almost two years to receive the results.

For the U.S. figure skating team, this is the first team Olympic gold medal in history.

Valieva, 15 years old at the time, helped win the gold medal for the Russian Olympic Committee in the event, with the United States in second and Japan in third. However, the medal ceremony was canceled as Valieva was found guilty of an “anti-doping rule violation” due to a positive test for the banned heart medication, trimetazidine, six weeks prior.

Valieva was issued a four-year ban from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday. The International Olympic Committee said it will “contact the respective NOCs [National Olympic Committees] in order to organize a dignified Olympic medal ceremony.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the ban asa politicized decision.

Important To Note: Russia was banned from international sporting competitions in 2019 by the World Anti-Doping Agency for four years, decreased to two years in 2020 by CAS. This led to the creation of the Russian Olympic Committee.
