It is the policy of the United States that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is unsustainable and must end. … The President has been clear that he is focused on peace. Effective March 3, 2025, we are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution.

An official statement from the U.S. State Department on why the U.S. has decided to pause military aid to Ukraine.

Why It Matters: The move to end military help comes days after a widely watched meeting in the Oval Office between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

  • How much aid has the U.S. given? “To date, we have provided $66.5 billion in military assistance since Russia launched its premeditated, unprovoked, and brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and approximately $69.2 billion in military assistance since Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014. We have now used the emergency Presidential Drawdown Authority on 55 occasions since August 2021 to provide Ukraine military assistance totaling approximately $31.7 billion from DoD stockpiles.” (U.S. State Department)
  • It’s not just about amount of aid but quality of aid: “Currently, Europe provides Ukraine with more assistance than the U.S., providing 60% of the country’s aid. However, US military support is still vital to Ukraine. One Western official recently described it as “the cream” in terms of weapons.”(BBC)
  • Recently, Europe announced it will help Ukraine work on a ceasefire plan that can be presented to President Trump.
