U.S. Releases Border Numbers for January

February 15, 2024

We continue to experience serious challenges along our border which surpass the capacity of the immigration system.

Senior official performing the duties of the United State Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner, Troy Miller.

Why It Matters: During January 2024, U.S. CBP recorded a total of 176,205 encounters of people attempting entry into the U.S. along the southwest border – a 42% drop from December’s historic high. Single adults continued to make up the majority of those encountered (61%), followed by families (34%) and unaccompanied minors (5%). While encounters along the southwest border decreased significantly from the prior month due to “seasonal trends, as well as enhanced enforcement efforts,” Miller said, encounters along the northern border slightly increased.

In early February, Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia of the U.S. Border Patrol Swanton Sector (an area consisting mainly of the U.S. northern border in parts of upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire) said, “Since October 1, 2023, Swanton Sector Border Patrol Agents have apprehended more than 3,100 subjects from 55 countries (more than Fiscal Years 2022, 21, 20 & 19 combined),” reflecting the increased number of encounters seen along the northern border over the past year.

Big Picture: People encountered along both the northern and southwest borders were processed under immigration law (Title 8) – meaning they were either allowed to stay in the U.S. pursuing asylum, detained, or removed with no legal basis to remain. In its press release on the January numbers, CBP says, “The majority of all individuals encountered at the southwest border over the past three years have been removed, returned, or expelled.” Meanwhile in a historic move on Capitol Hill, the House voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, blaming him for “fueling the worst border catastrophe in American history.” Learn more HERE.
