If attacks by Iran’s proxies against U.S. forces continue, we will not hesitate to take further necessary measures to protect our people.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin in a statement released by the Department of Defense on two “self-defense strikes” on facilities in Syria, after accusing Iranian-backed forces attacked U.S. positions in recent days.

Why It Matters: Over the last week, the Pentagon has detailed a number of drone attacks, against U.S. positions in Syria and Iraq – one attack led to the death of a U.S. civilian contractor and 21 service members suffered minor injuries.

“The United States does not seek conflict and has no intention nor desire to engage in further hostilities, but these Iranian-backed attacks against U.S. forces are unacceptable and must stop. Iran wants to hide its hand and deny its role in these attacks against our forces. We will not let them.” Read full statement here

The Pentagon also announced 900 soldiers deploying to an undisclosed area within Central Command.
