Today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly as prime minister of this great country that the United Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the United Kingdom officially recognizing the state of Palestine – on the same day France, Canada and Australia did the same.
Why It Matters: The recognition of Palestine as an independent state breaks with key allies, including the United States and Israel. Supporters argue that strong leadership and an independent Palestinian state could lead Palestinians to reject Hamas and move toward a more peaceful Middle East. Critics believe the opposite – that recognition undermines past efforts to unify leadership in Gaza and the West Bank and effectively rewards Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was blunt: “I have a clear message to those leaders who recognize a Palestinian state after the terrible massacre on Oct. 7: You are giving a huge reward to terrorism. And I have another message for you: It will not happen. A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River.”
Important to Consider: Israel estimates 48 hostages remain in Hamas control. Some view the recognition of a Palestinian state as giving up a potential bartering chip for their return. The recognition also raises unanswered questions: Who would lead a Palestinian state? How would it be governed? And what would that future look like in practice?
