Ukraine calls up reservists

We are here to overcome, not to cry.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as the nation tapped approx. 36,000 reservists to join the active duty military.
  • Reservists would join Ukraine's active duty military of roughly 200,000.
  • The government declared a state of emergency – this would allow seizure of property, curfews and the ability to suspend protests. However, the state of emergency was not immediately enacted; Ukraine's parliament must now vote to approve the measures.
  • Why It Matters: Ukraine's president said that while the country is mobilizing reservists, they are not instituting a general draft of civilians; this latest move does show, however, a nation preparing for the worst-case scenario – war with Russia.
  • Interesting fact: Ukraine's population is an est. 44 million – that's *roughly* the population size of California and Oregon.
