Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak tweeted on Monday following drone strikes on two Russian air bases.
Why It Matters: The strikes landed in Russia, more than 300 miles from the border of Ukraine; Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for what The Associated Press describes as “some of the most brazen [attacks] inside Russia during the war” which began more than nine months ago. The Russian Defense Ministry recognized the attack and said at least three Russian soldiers were killed.
Important Context: The drones had to travel up to 400 miles undetected in order to reach Russia, indicating a “potentially serious security lapse by Russia,” according to The Washington Post. Although Ukraine has not directly taken responsibility for the attacks, Ukrainian officials have alluded to its involvement.
