Ukraine Passes Laws To Increase Troop Numbers

April 4, 2024

I can say that Russia is preparing to mobilize an additional 300,000 military personnel on June 1.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters after signing three bills into law intended to strengthen the number of troops fighting for Ukraine.

Why It Matters: The new laws lower Ukraine’s draft eligibility for men from 27 to 25. They also create an online registry for recruited troops and take away some draft exemptions. The new laws, contested by some, could add around 50,000 troops to the military and comes as Ukraine seeks to bolster the number of troops going into spring and summer.

Something To Consider: The average soldier’s age on both sides is over 40, military analysts say. Some Ukrainians worry that lowering the minimum conscription age to 25 and taking more young adults out of the workforce could backfire by further harming the war-ravaged economy, which is why the draft age wasn’t simply set at 18. But the problem has become more pressing because Kyiv is expecting a renewed push by Russian forces this spring or summer,” explains The Associated Press.
