Update on Brian Laundrie

Steve Bertolino, a lawyer for Brian Laundrie’s parents, on the identification of human remains as those of Brian Laundrie.

• Brian Laundrie (23) is a person of interest in the death of his girlfriend, Gabby Petito (22).
• After being missing for weeks, Gabby’s body was discovered on September 19th in Wyoming, near where the couple was last seen.
• Brian Laundrie has not been seen since September 14th, raising questions about his involvement with Gabby’s death; he reportedly told his parents he was going for a hike near where these items were discovered.
• These human remains were found near objects (notebook, backpack) belonging to Laundrie. The Associated Press adds that “the items and remains were found in a swampy area — home to alligators, snakes, coyotes and other wildlife — that had previously been underwater.”

Why It Matters: On Thursday, one day after the human remains were found in a Florida nature preserve, the FBI confirmed the human remains found are indeed Brian Laundrie’s. The cause of death remains unclear.
