“What you are looking at is the American Dream.”

Winsome Sears, born in Jamaica, immigrated to the United States at the age of 6 after her father first came to America to pave a path for her family (as she recalls, with $1.75 in his pocket). She later joined the Marines, served in the Virginia state legislature, built a business as a trained electrician, and served on the state’s school board. A Republican, she’s the first black woman to be elected lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia.

Winsome Sears will become Virginia lieutenant governor, CNN projects, becoming first female and woman of color in the office
