It was really about saving our democracy, getting away from extremism and having a fair and impartial court where everybody gets a fair shot in the courtroom.

Janet Protasiewicz, who was elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday. It was the most expensive judicial election in U.S. history.

Important Context: Wisconsin is a key swing state during presidential elections, and many have considered this race the most important of the year because of the emphasis on elections (security, voting laws, etc.) and abortion. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, many states are looking to their own Supreme Court for updated laws.

Why It Matters: The election of Janet Protasiewicz – who ran on a progressive platform and had support from the Wisconsin Democratic Party – will flip the state’s highest court to a 4-3 liberal majority for the first time in 15 years; Protasiewicz will begin her 10-year term in August as conservative Justice Patience Roggensack retires. This shift will come as the court is set to weigh in on the state’s 1849 abortion law, with Judge Protasiewicz expected to help reverse the ban. Also on the court’s radar: Voting laws and redistricting.
