Benevolence to others, especially the helping of strangers, which went up dramatically in 2021, stayed high in 2022.

John Helliwell, one of the authors of the World Happiness Report. The annual United Nations report found that benevolence is around 25% higher than it was pre-pandemic.

Why It Matters: The annual report surveyed people from more than 150 countries and collected data about average life evaluations between 2020 and 2022. Finland ranked the happiest country in the world for the sixth year in a row, with Denmark in the No. 2 place and Iceland ranking No. 3. The U.S. ranked No. 15 on this year's report, improving from its previous No. 16 spot.

What makes Finland so happy? One Finnish philosopher and psychology researcher stated that the key is to “Focus more on what makes you happy and less on looking successful. The first step to true happiness is to set your own standards, instead of comparing yourself to others.”
