World’s Most Powerful Rocket Successfully Returns to Earth

June 7, 2024

We are another step closer to returning humanity to the Moon through #Artemis — then looking onward to Mars.

Administrator of NASA, Bill Nelson, on X congratulating SpaceX for the Starship rocket’s first successful return to earth, after launching on Thursday.

Why It Matters: The Starship rocket – the most powerful and also reusable rocket ever to exist – embarked on its fourth launch out of Texas on Thursday. What set this launch apart from others is that it marked the first time Starship propelled into space where it traveled halfway around the world before successfully reentering the atmosphere, splashing down in the Indian Ocean. NASA hopes to one day use Starship for carrying astronauts to the moon; SpaceX founder Elon Musk would like to use it to carry people to Mars, too.
