… I know that the time is right now for me to step away and chase other dreams …

Ash Barty, announcing her decision to retire from tennis just two months after winning the Australian Open.
  • Ash Barty, a 25 year-old Australian tennis star, announced her retirement via Instagram on Wednesday.
  • The announcement came as a surprise. Barty spent more than two consecutive years ranked No. 1 in women's tennis and has won 25 of her last 26 matches. Barty is only the second woman to retire while being the top-ranked tennis player in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).
  • In an interview with her former doubles partner, Barty stated, “I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top level any more. I am spent.”

Something To Consider: The average retirement age for professional tennis players is around 27 years old, though top-ranked players typically average later retirement.
