Zelensky update

March 28, 2022
Ukrainian President Zelensky on negotiating with Russia to end the war.

Security guarantees and neutrality, non-nuclear status of our state — we are ready to go for it.

President Volodymyr Zelensky signals he’d agree to “neutral status” ahead of planned talks between Russia and Ukraine on Tuesday.
  • "Neutral status" would mean Ukraine would not pursue membership with NATO and not engage in future conflict. Think of Switzerland (SmartHER read HERE). Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but has engaged in sanctions with the EU on Russia (a rare break in tradition). But overall, Switzerland has a reputation for not taking sides and not participating in military conflicts.
  • This marks a turn for Zelensky, who has previously discussed joining NATO and the EU.
  • Why This Matters: The timing and the audience both matter. This announcement came in an interview with Russian journalists, and prior to talks with Russia on Tuesday. While the headline marks a change from Zelensky's previous comments, he added that only face-to-face talks with Russian Pres. Putin could end the war (Associated Press).
