It’s time to get back to our roots around free expression. We’re replacing fact checkers with Community Notes, simplifying our policies and focusing on reducing mistakes. Looking forward to this next chapter.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing changes to the company’s content moderation policies on its three platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Threads.
Why It Matters: Meta plans to end its fact-checking program, reduce censorship of content and reinstate political content based on personal preferences, according to the company’s announcement Tuesday. Meta said programs they created to moderate content had become too complicated, leading to unnecessary content censorship and account restrictions (commonly called “Facebook jail”).
Changes You Will See and When:
- Meta will move its third-party fact-checking program to a Community Notes feature (similar to X) within the next two months.
- In the coming weeks, Meta will lift restrictions on certain frequently debated topics (such as immigration and gender). Meta says that along with these changes, “we will be moving the trust and safety teams that write our content policies and review content out of California to Texas and other US locations.”
- Political content will return to the feed. While they didn’t give a precise date, Meta said “We are going to start phasing this back into Facebook, Instagram and Threads with a more personalized approach so that people who want to see more political content in their feeds can.”
Worth Noting: Zuckerberg warned that these changes will cause an uptick in harmful content: “The reality is that this is a trade-off. It means that we’re going to catch less bad stuff, but we’ll also reduce the number of innocent people’s posts and accounts that we accidentally take down.”
