Former CIA Employee Pleads Guilty to Fraud
“… abused his position and betrayed the public trust.”
CIA Director John Ratcliffe after a former senior agency employee pleaded guilty Tuesday to defrauding the federal government of approximately $194 million. According to court documents, David Rush, 49, lied about his education and military background to secure his position, where he held a top-secret security clearance. He then used his authority to fabricate government programs to obtain federal funds for personal use. Among other fraudulent activities, Rush used government funds for nearly $2 million in private flights and acquired a car, multiple luxury properties, designer wrist watches and hundreds of gold bars. He faces up to 20 years in prison in a case that raises questions about the federal government’s hiring processes and internal controls.

California Couple Faces Child Abuse Charges
“… house of horrors …”
L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announcing felony charges Tuesday against a wealthy Southern California couple in what he called an “unprecedented” child abuse case involving 15 children, most born through surrogacy. Authorities linked at least 21 children to Guojun Xuan, 66, and Silvia Zhang, 39, who allegedly misled prospective surrogates about their family and ability to conceive. Prosecutors say the couple encouraged nannies to physically abuse the children while they watched the abuse through surveillance cameras and, in Xuan’s case, participated in it. Both pleaded not guilty. Xuan’s attorney, Mitchell Krems, said his client was “being unfairly scrutinized” because of his Chinese background and decision to have a large family.
Bigger Picture: Laws around surrogacy differ state-to-state; no comprehensive federal law regulates surrogacy policy in America.
