There must be a U.S. backstop, because a U.S. security guarantee is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer as concern rises in Europe of talks between America and Russia.

Why It Matters: European leaders and top officials from NATO and the European Union gathered in an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the war in Ukraine and Europe’s role in negotiating its end. In response to questions about concerns that Europe is being excluded from peace talks, U.S. President Donald Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Gen. Keith Kellogg, said “I don’t think it’s reasonable and feasible to have everybody sitting at the table. We know how that can turn out and that has been our point, is keeping it clean and fast as we can.”

The following day, U.S. officials met with their Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia to discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Notably absent were Ukrainian officials who weren’t invited. These talks come days after Pres. Trump said he expects to meet with Russian Pres. Putin in Saudi Arabia in the “not too distant future.”

America has provided an estimated $66 billion in aid since the start of the war, now entering its third year.
