Whichever path we choose, we will have to continue to allow the entry of minimal humanitarian supplies.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement announcing a “tactical pause” of attacks in populated areas of Gaza for 10 hours a day. The pause allows aid agencies, like the United Nations, to deliver goods.
Why It Matters: The arrival of support comes after nearly five months of relief agencies having little to no access to the 2 million people living in Gaza during the ongoing conflict with Israel. Aid agencies distributed more than 120 truckloads of food to the Gaza Strip on Monday, following Israel’s announcement to cease daytime attacks. However, the war continues, as Israel indicated they will maintain an offensive against Hamas in other areas of Gaza.
The UN Relief Chief released a statement after Israel’s announcement, saying, “One in three people in Gaza hasn’t eaten for days… We welcome Israel’s decision to support a one-week scale-up of aid, including lifting customs barriers on food, medicine, and fuel from Egypt and the reported designation of secure routes for UN humanitarian convoys.”
