Whether we like it or not, we’re suddenly engaged in a fast-paced competition to build and define this groundbreaking technology that will determine so much about the future of civilization itself.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday while unveiling his administration’s Artificial Intelligence plan. Following his address, President Trump signed three executive orders relating to AI technology.
Why It Matters: The framework outlines how the government plans to accelerate the use of AI, build more infrastructure to support it, and develop international security and diplomacy around its usage. This initiative includes more than 90 federal policy actions for the government to implement within the next year, such as loosening environmental regulations for the swift development of data centers. The plan also outlines how the U.S. aims to compete with China, which has invested heavily in AI technology.
Another Perspective: “Critics of Trump’s AI approach say cutbacks to renewable energy incentives, including through the megalaw signed July 4, will restrain the ability to build out data centers, cut jobs and worsen air pollution. Solar power currently is the fastest growing power source in the U.S.
The plan “will put public safety in the back seat and green-light the rapid deployment of AI products with no clear safeguards,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, during a call with reporters ahead of the announcement. It is a “fossil fuel subsidy in disguise.”” (Politico)
