The upcoming hearings … are a critical step in our mission to understand the contributing factors that led to the incident and, even more importantly, the actions needed to prevent a similar occurrence.

U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation chair, Jason Neubauer, highlighting the significance of a public hearing that began Monday as part of the Coast Guard’s investigation into the Titan submersible loss.

Why It Matters: The Titan submersible, owned by OceanGate Explorations, imploded while seeking to visit the Titanic in the summer of 2023, killing all five passengers on board. The hearing, which is expected to last two weeks, will involve testimony from industry experts and former staff of OceanGate, as well as a look at evidence uncovered in the Coast Guard’s investigation. The goal of the hearing is to “determine the causes of the Titan submersible’s loss, identify contributing factors, and develop safety recommendations to prevent similar incidents.”

New Details Revealed: On Wednesday, the Coast Guard released footage showing the Titan submersible on the ocean floor. The video came just two days after the Coast Guard revealed one of the final messages – saying “all good here” – sent by the crew before losing contact with its support ship.
