Visibility in water can be increased or decreased depending on the color of a swimsuit or clothing.

Co-founder and owner of water safety company Alive Solutions, Natalie Livingston, on findings of two independent experiments in which Alive Solutions found certain swimsuit colors are easier to spot while swimming. Bright colors increase visibility, thus helping during emergency situations.

Why It Matters: Drowning is the number one cause of death in children ages 1 to 4 (other than birth defects) and a leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14. For all ages, drowning is the fifth cause of preventable injury-related deaths. The recent experiments published by Alive Solutions add to data suggesting swimsuit colors play a major factor in water safety, particularly when rescues need to occur. Experts suggest bright and contrasting colors for swimsuits to help increase visibility.

Some Advice:People should avoid swimsuits in light blue, gray, or green as they can blend with the water and pool surroundings, making it difficult to spot a child. We recommend bright and contrasting colors such as neon yellow, orange, pink, and bright red. These colors are highly visible both underwater and on the surface,” explained Bernard Fisher, director of health and safety for the American Lifeguard Association.
