The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska.
U.S. President Donald Trump in a Truth Social post over the weekend, announcing the first meeting between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin since 2019.
Why It Matters: The Alaskan meeting marks Pres. Putin’s first trip to the U.S. in a decade. The two leaders will discuss ending Russia’s three-year war with Ukraine, with Pres. Putin expected to push for Russia to keep Ukrainian territory captured since the war began, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying he will not concede land. As of Monday, Pres. Zelenskyy has not been invited to the meeting.
Did You Know? Alaska has historical significance to Russia, as Russia sold the territory to the U.S. in 1867, marking the end to Russian land ownership in North America. Russia sold Alaska for $7.2 million, which is equivalent to about $156 million today.
